Hola amigooooos!!!

This week I want to tell you all about my favourite ski resort in the the heart of the Spanish Pyrenees. A well kept secret, not as famous as Gstaad or Courchevel but more authentic and captivating: Baqueira, in the Aran Valley. I like to refer to it as the Ibiza of the winter. A super cool ski resort full of restaurants, shops, beautiful villages and the best entertainment where you will find the perfect snow getaway.
I have been coming here all my life, so what I will show you are my top insider tips and favourite places… let’s start with the snow adventures!

Baqueira is not the most accessible ski resort, and I believe that is what makes it special and has helped to maintain its exclusivity. If you are planning to come, I suggest you stay more than a weekend so you get to know and enjoy all the resort has to offer.
From Barcelona you have to drive about 3.30 h
From Madrid either you drive about 6.30h or take the Ave train to Lerida 2.40h and then drive to Baqueira for 2.30 h
If you are traveling from outside of Spain, the smarter option may be to fly to Toulouse airport and from there you only have 2h drive to the resort.

If you want to spend some ski days in the slopes of the fabulous Baqueira/Beret station, my best recommendation is that you stay at La Pleta by Rafael Hotels. A super luxury 5 star hotel located in front of the ski resort, with incredible views over Aran’s valley.
One of my favourite things about the hotel is their dream Spa. I like to have the Aromatherapy treatment which consists of 50 minutes of relaxing scented oil massage, the best of it is that they keep wrapping you in very hot towels. Amazing feeling when its snowing outside!! After the massage you get to enjoy a cup of tea and the Spa facilities which include a Hammam (great for the skin and detoxing ), sauna, a water circuit for the circulation, a jacuzzi and an indoor pool.
The best après ski plan! Don’t we all agree? 🙂

We are in Baqueira/Beret, one of the best ski stations in the world. And we are also in Spain so the sun is a quality we have here almost every day 🙂

Choose your sport; ski, snowboard, rackets, mountain skiing, cross-country skiing… The options are endless and you can rent your equipment right in the slopes so you don’t need to take it with you.

The ski station is huge there are so many slopes to choose from depending on your ski level. The snow quality is amazing and that is why Baqueira is very well known for, they take great care of the snow maintenance. You also have different areas inside the station such as a snowpark for jumping around, and a slalom stadium.

Off skis you can go on snow expeditions with dog sledges or snowmobiles and race your way through the mountains to arrive to the abandoned village of Montgarri, I recommend you do this excursion by night under the moonlight! You will remember it forever!

There are many villages composing the ‘Baqueira’ resort and that deserve a visit on your side:
Arties: known for its night life and bars perfect for a night out, go to La Luna for a first drink and then head to El Divino for some dancing!
Salardú, beautiful to visit the church with its famous romanic paintings.
Unha: One of the most beautiful villages to walk around, I suggest you take the path through the mountains that connects Unha to Gessa village and has wonderful views over the valley.
Baqueira: Here you will find my favourite shop and where I buy all my fur coats: K3 Piel. @k3piel

If there is one thing I love more than skiing here is the gastronomy of the Aran valley. The resort is full of amazing restaurants and many times I just come to Baqueira to eat and relax. Even though there are so many great places I want to tell you my top 3 and compulsory stops that I never miss on my trips here:

Casa Rufus: My personal favourite where absolutely anything you order from the menu is delicious. I come here more than once when im in Baqueira. I recommend you have the Olla Aranesa, typical from the region or the onion soup which is amazing!! The vegetable soup I love it as well, it’s so hard to decide when all they do is so amazing. As a second dish I suggest you have the steak with foie and honey sauce or the rabo de toro. For dessert you can have the 3 chocolate tart which is very soft and is well worth to try! Located in the Gessa village. Phone: 973 645 246 @casarufus

Biniaran: Another compulsory stop is the Biniaran restaurant, the most famous here is to have the Entrecôte cafe de Paris! They have a menu full of delicious dishes and they have a special menu for the Entrecôte which consists of fried artichokes with alioli sauce to start with and then the Entrecôte with the sauce that comes in a tray with fire underneath so you can finish to cook it to taste, I personally like it very rear but its also a way to keep the meat warm while you eat it and believe me its a big Entrecôte you must come here hungry! 🙂 They serve it with salad in a delicious vinaigrette sauce and french fries. The best about Biniaran is also their location in the heart of Arties, so the best is to come here the night you are planning on going out so you are already in the party area and don’t need to drive. Phone: 973 641 058 @biniaran

Meson Casa Benito: Talking about classics, you must come to this Meson restaurant to enjoy the Aranese traditional cuisine dishes. The owner Domingo and his wife take care of every detail and are super friendly and attentive, they will recommend you the daily specials. My favourite and must have dishes are the Aubergines with cheese and meat and the croquetas! But one dish that I dream of eating when I arrive to Baqueira is their famous Bacalao Benito (cod fish ) yes, contrary to what people might think because we are lost in the mountains , the fish in Baqueira is of exceptional quality as it arrives from the north of Spain where we have top seafood. For desert do not miss the cheesecake!!!! So Meson Benito must be on your list of fabulous restaurants! It is located in Casarilh restaurant. Phone: 973 641 154 @mesonbenito

My Rovitip is that you come to Baqueira in the winter months and try to stay here for a week, ski, have fun, explore the little villages, take pictures and blend in to local traditions, Chill by the fireplace and drink red wine, enjoy watching the snow fall. We have one life amigos, but if we do it well one life is enough! 🙂

Sooo now that you know a bit more about my winter getaway and I hope you come to visit it and enjoy the beauty of Spain that is not only summer and beaches!

Very useful information about Baqueira. I’m gonna visit Baqueira on February/2018. Do you know if it is a quite travel from Barcelona to Baqueira? Do I need to worry with snow on the road?

From Barcelona to Baqueira its about 3h30 drive, you don’t need to worry about the snow on the road as they take really good care of it 🙂
