This week I want to tell you everything about my recent trip to the Gili Islands!! The super famous islands next to Bali! Welcome to the paradisiac Gili T, Gili Meno and Gili Air.
The main reason of this trip has been to attend my friends Judith and Alex wedding, a wonderful ceremony at the beach of the hotel Vila Ombak, the most beautiful resort in the island of Gili T! Let’s start with the adventure!
HOW TO GET HERE:
Arriving to the Gili Islands is not the easiest of the tasks. And that is one of the reasons why the islands have maintained their charm and untouched natural status.
To go to Gili you will need to take a ferri, from Padang Bay we took one to Gili T direct to our Hotel Vila Ombak, it takes about 1.30 h sailing.
THE HOTEL: VILA OMBAK
Vila Ombak is a beachfront resort made up of Indonesian style villas. The resort is a bit like a village, you have everything you need here and there is not really need to leave the hotel, you have the beach, the spa (great balinese massage), restaurants, water sports, even a hospital… If you are going to book a room here, there are many different types to choose from. There are the villas with private pool, there are the regular rooms, super spacious and comfortable and then one that I thought was very cool is the traditional Lombok hut, where you get the whole Indonesian villa for yourself. The best about these villas, is the open air bathroom and outdoor shower!
If you are thinking about having a destination wedding at the beach I can totally recommend you Vila Ombak for organising such a dream celebration. The hotel’s wedding planner, Dewi, set up a top venue at the beach with an altar full of frangipani flowers, a live band with singers, Balinese firework shows, beautifully decorated tables on the sand (all the guests ended up dancing with no shoes ) a super delicious food buffet with lobster, sushi, salads, bbq and so many tasty desserts including of course the wedding cake! Since Gili T is a very small island it turns out the hotel manager, Marky, is also the resident Dj! Super fun night that I will always remember, the best of all… we all ended up in the pool!
WHAT TO DO:
Enjoy the beach and the two pools at the hotel (and the bars inside the pool haha) . During the day, take a snorkel tour around the Gili islands. I recommend that you book the tour from the hotel, since they have the newest equipment. On the snorkel tour you will find a shipwreck at Gili T, the best turtle spotting is at Gili Meno and finally the best snorkel for seeing tropical coloured fish is at Gili Air.
Gili T is best known for being the bigger island and the most ‘party place’ between the three Gilis. You will not believe how such a small island has such a large quantity of bars, live music shows and karaokes!
In the afternoon I suggest you take a bike tour around the island, literally, there is only one road next to the beach so there is no loss 😉 and you will complete the island in one hour. You can rent the bikes at the hotel, try the fat bikes with wide wheel super cool and perfect for the sandy paths on the road.
For the best sunsets head to Pink Coco, just about 5 minutes with the bicycle from Vila Ombak, a really beautiful experience watching the pink skies… and also great for taking pictures, here is where I took the famous water hammock photos.
WHERE TO EAT:
Vila Ombak: The hotel offers a fantastic breakfast buffet by the beach. Perfect to start the day with eggs, fresh fruits and beautiful beach views. Also great to order food at the restaurants by the pool and the room service! Fried calamari and the grilled chicken were my favourite dishes.
Naty’s: The most beautiful beachfront restaurant just 5 minute walk from the hotel, perfect for dinner and a night out!
Trattoria: The best pizza in the island, order the arugula with speck and mozzarella pizza, top top!
Sama Sama: the coolest bar for drinks, there is a live band singing that will keep you dancing all night long 😉
Tamy’s Neverland: In Gili Air island, we stopped here at our snorkel day trip, great place to eat a grilled fish and enjoy the views to the black sand volcanic beach.
There is no motor in the island ie. No cars, motorbikes etc, so you will get around by foot or bicicle! There are also some pony cars, the island taxis that can drive you around!
Wear comfortable shoes and flip flops for the beach, the sand is super super hot and there are lots of corals so its better to wear shoes when you walk around!
