This week we are discovering one of the most beautiful and less known islands in Greece, the magical Ionian islands! The most spectacular paradise of cristal clear waters, forested mountains and amazing food and people!
We all know about the popular (and summer overpopulated ) Santorini and Mykonos, but the Ionian islands on the other side of Greece have remained a true gem that only few people know, let me tell you a bit about them.. but keep it to yourselves amigos they are our little secret 😉
HOW TO GET HERE:
Fly to Corfu. You can find many direct flights, Vueling, Easy Jet … I flew with Aegean with stop in Athens as it was most convenient for my timings! Always a pleasure to fly with them. One of the few airlines that still serves food and drinks on their flights, and candy before take off, small details that make the difference.
WHERE TO STAY:
You have two main options to travel around all these gorgeous islands, I explored them by boat and I totally recommend it, so you can cruise around and feel the sea, every corner and discover the islands all over!
In case you are more of a land person, I can recommend you a fabulous hotel I found at one of the stops we did, the Domotel Agios Nikolaos at the village of Syvota. An all suites resort with a private beach and the best views to the Ionian sea. Syvota is not an island but continent, you could drive to the hotel from Athens and arrive in 3h or you could take a helicopter and land directly at the hotel’s property! Perfect place to disconnect!
Corfu: The main Ionian island and where you will land. A beautiful town worth exploring, walk around its little streets, buy some souvenir and dine at the ristorante del Sole, located in one of the most beautiful streets all with flowers, an Italian restaurant where you will enjoy the best pasta dishes and freshest fish carpaccios. I reccomend the Greek Salad and the tuna carpaccio and the truffle fettuccini ! Have a drink at the old town of Corfu at Azur cafe with the best views of the Naok marina! Top Top! Im gonna tell you a little gossip here amigos, you know who arrived to the yacht next to us at the Corfu Marina? The Spanish king Juan Carlos! The royals know how to vacation that is forsureee!
Syvota: As I explained you before in Syvota you will find the fantastic Domotel Agios Nikolaos, I came here for dinner and the views to the sea are breathtaking! Have the typical Greek salad, grilled octopus and the grilled shrimps! Total mediterranean diet! Ahh and let’s not forget about the Greek rosé wine, Theotoky!
Meganisi island; – Vathi: My favorite village of them all. Like turning back in time to the real Greek essence with fisherman fixing their nets, organising their boats… The town is very small but it has one of the most beautiful restaurants in the world I have seen! The Porto Vathi Errikos restaurant. Located right next to the sea you can almost touch the water while you are eating. Surrounded by flowers and with the cutest decoration colours all in blue, you will feel at a Greek fairytale. What you need to order here is the fried cheese (my favourite thing in Greece ), of course the Greek salad is a must and then try one of the giant grilled fish they have that day!
Meganisi Island – Porto Spilia; Next to Vathi still on the Meganisi island you will find a wonderful little cave with a little marina and two beach club restaurants. My favourite Porto Spilia where the owner is running around in his small zodiac directing where all the boats should moor. Come here for the fresh fish and the grilled cheese! The place is very chill and the tables are on the sand next to the water, enjoy the fabulous views and the turquoise waters!
Scorpios Island: The famous island of shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis one of the richest men in the world! In this island many love stories happened.. Onassis had a love affair here with the world famous opera singer Maria Callas, and later he started a relationship with Jackie Kennedy, and here is where they got married! Onassis was very loved amongst the Greek in the area because he helped them a lot, he took care of his people by bringing doctors to the neighbouring islands for the kids, teachers, creating business and helping the local economy. The island is full of love stories and anecdotes and we should need a post only to tell them all! Finally the heiress of Scorpios was the granddaughter of Onassis who sold the island for 100 million pounds to a Russian heiress!
The best advice I can give you is that if you want to escape the masses this summer you get on a boat ( there are many charter services around the Ionian islands) and set sail here. You will enjoy a real vacation cruising around the Ionian islands, tasting the most delicious food, watching the most fascinating pink sunsets and exploring places that not many people know!
Soooo all of this and many more Greek adventures you will see live on the video I will upload next week on my Youtube channel RoviTravel by Mon Rovi Subscribe and let’s continue to explore the world together!
